Since the last update, strange characters are displayed in WhatsApp on some iPhone models. However, this only affects incoming and outgoing calls. What the cryptic characters mean is unclear. Not all Apple users seem to have had the error since the update and some suspect that they have a hacked iPhone.
Weird characters in Whatsapp
There is no discernible system in the characters. It seems as if Whatsapp is displaying a wild mix of special characters during calls. However, the number appears to change during a call. For example, as long as the phone rings, “70/1K” is displayed. As soon as the other side hangs up, it says “)Vd*b”. These WhatsApp problems have not occurred in the past.
The following character combinations have already been reported to us:
- 70/1K
- a-{{<
- )Vd*b
- mq[_b
- JBVg
- `{IWb
- WFdx`
- y8H-:
- vd*b
- u-j)G
- 2IQWQ
- `q`lo
- Y7W2h
WhatsApp character mix worldwide
The problem with really questionable characters seems to be occurring worldwide. There are reports from Germany, Malaysia, Nigeria, Argentina, USA…
What to do with special characters in Whatsapp
There is still no solution to the problem with the character mix during calls. Unfortunately, trying to delete WhatsApp and reinstall it didn’t bring any improvement. We can currently only recommend that everyone wait until WhatsApp Inc releases a new update that will hopefully fix the problem.
Update February 22, 2024
The error has been fixed with the latest WhatsApp update 24.4.4:
There are now formatting options for quotes, bullets, numbered lists and inline code.
You can now create stickers from images or decorate them using tools. Tap the sticker icon in chat, go to the sticker tab, and tap “+” to use the new sticker tool.
